Dennison Memorial Community Center
Success Story

Ronnie’s Story

Ronnie’s story is a sad and tragic one.

Ronnie’s mother was diagnosed with the HIV virus and ultimately AIDS. Ronnie had to move in with his Aunt and Uncle due to the fact that his mother was moved into a home for AIDS patients.

This past fall Ronnie entered his first year of high school. His Aunt and Uncle were very concerned with his attitude towards school because of what was happening with his mother. Both his Aunt and Uncle attended meetings with the school in hopes of improving his dedication towards his homework. Ronnie was encouraged by the staff at the Community Center to use the resources provided by the Fleet Tutoring Center at Dennison Memorial, which is supported by the Bank of America.

Ronnie’s mother died of the AIDS virus on October 21 and his first quarter grades showed the strain of the loss. After talking with his Aunt and Uncle, Ronnie decided to utilize every resource provided to him by the Fleet Tutoring Center, supported by Bank of America. A partnership was developed between his teachers, the Center, and his Aunt and Uncle to assist Ronnie in his academic progress.

Since Ronnie started to utilize the Fleet Tutoring Center, supported by Bank of America, his whole attitude has become very positive. The staff, teachers and his family were impressed with the change, but they didn’t know how it would reflect on his grades.

Report Card Day came and Ronnie proudly showed the staff the fruit of his labors. Ronnie had received six A’s and one C! The staff and his Aunt and Uncle, were so very proud of what Ronnie had accomplished by utilizing the resources available to him through the support of the United Way.

What an extraordinary day for an extraordinary young man! Words can not describe the emotions that were felt that day for Ronnie. He now knows what he can do to be successful in academics. Somewhere his mother is smiling and is very proud of her son.

Without the United Way Agency, none of this would have been possible. The United Way founded the partnership with Fleet Bank and later Bank of America to provide a Tutoring Center for the children at the Dennison Memorial Community Center. This partnership has helped countless young people, just like Ronnie.
