Big Brother Big Sister Program

Robby & Derek’s Story:

Meet "Little Brother" Robby, a 13 year-old boy growing up in a single parent home. Robby had been patiently awaiting a "Big" for five year when Derek came along.

Derek, a local fire fighter, volunteered with the Big Brother Big Sister Program and was quickly matched with Robby. When Derek first met Robby, he was struggling in math and getting Cs and Ds on his report card. It seemed that when Robby started a math problem he became nervous and frustrated and kept thinking he couldn't do it. Knowing this, Derek decided they would spend part of their time together studying. Derek went over math problems with Robby step by step and told him that if he starts to think he can't do it he has to at least try. Robby took Derek’s advice and is acing his math exams!

"When I got my fist 100, I was like YES!" said a beaming Robby. Science was Robby’s favorite subject, and now its math. Derek helped Robby get accepted to the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. When the pair isn’t studying for the next big math exam, they're out fishing, going to the movies, and even attending some Celtics and Red Sox games. Even though Derek has completed his one year commitment, he continues his relationship with Robby.

This experience has changed Robby's life forever. If Robby never met Derek how would Robby's life be different? Would he have gotten the chance to experience standing on the half court at a Celtics game, watch the Red Sox beat the Mets, and most importantly have a male role model be there for him? Most likely not, which is why Big Brother Big Sister is so important.
