The Women’s Center
A woman in danger desperately needed assistance
leaving an abusive relationship. She and her sons
had been turned away from a number of shelters who
refused to help her because her “boys” looked like
grown men. One center even told the woman that if
her oldest son was mentally disabled they could have
helped her. No matter where she turned she was
advised to leave her oldest son behind so that she
could find a shelter, but she was determined to keep
her family together.
When she contacted the MA Department of Transitional
Assistance and Jane Doe, both referred her to New
Bedford because “The Women’s Center helps everyone.”
Upon receiving her call on the 24-hour hotline, TWC
staff began working immediately to “safehome” the
family because all of their shelters were full at
the time. After calling around, they finally found a
suitable placement in another state.
“We knew we had the right shelter when the person
answering the phone said that the boys were victims,
too,” remarked one of the staff members.
The Women’s Center paid for transportation to
relocate the entire family and is confident that
they are safe and on their way to healing and
starting a new, violence-free life in their new
home.
The Women’s Center provides direct services to
victims as well as education and outreach to the
community. The Center serves more than 4,000
victims, families, children and non-offending
caregivers and community members each year through
four programs: Domestic Violence Program, Sexual
Assault Program, Child Trauma Program, and Education
and Outreach. All services are free and
confidential.
