Coastline Elderly Services
Joe*, a 60-year-old, unemployed school teacher with
a very limited income, couldn’t afford groceries and
therefore was unable to maintain proper nutrition.
Because he lacked transportation, Joe was not able
to secure a new job or apply for further benefits
for assistance. Just as Joe was facing the serious
risk of going hungry, Elder Protective Services
reported his case to the Community Mainstream
program at Coastline Elderly.
Immediately, Joe received a food stamp application,
gift cards and transportation to a shopping center
in order to purchase groceries to alleviate the
immediate risk. He was approved for the maximum
allowed food stamps for an individual - $155 per
month. Coastline advocated for Joe to receive
transportation to the local Council on Aging meal
site, where he was also able to use their computers
to search the Department of Employment website for
jobs. Additionally, he was provided transportation
to the Social Security Administration so he could
apply for disability benefits.
Joe, who was suicidal when he walked through the
doors of Coastline Elderly Services, has stated that
he feels he found a place to turn to when he could
not otherwise anyone to listen to him and assist him
when he was in dire need.
