Coastline Elderly Services 2
Sylvia* was an 82-year-old widow barely making ends
meet financially. Although her daughter and
granddaughter lived with her, they were of limited
means and unable to help her with living expenses.
The family had previously tried to get assistance
for Sylvia to alleviate the stress of paying her
expenses and monthly bills. Unfortunately Sylvia was
unable to advocate for herself, as she had been
diagnosed of Alzheimer’s disease.
A representative from Coastline Elderly’s Community
Mainstream Program completed a thorough assessment
and determined that Sylvia was eligible for various
services. She was approved for $126 per month for
food stamps. It was also determined that Sylvia’s
spouse, now deceased for many years, had been a
veteran and was honorably discharged from the US
Army in 1945. The family was encouraged to search
for this husband’s DD 214, which they discovered.
Coastline coordinated a referral to the local
veteran’s agent and Sylvia was determined eligible
for a $344 per month widow’s pension. In addition,
they found grant money to pay for more than half of
Sylvia’s outstanding past excise tax, reaching back
at least 7 years.
Thanks to the Community Mainstream program, Sylvia
was able to regain her financial footing and
position herself for a secure future.
