Summer Fund: A Program of United Way
Marie’s Story – Camp Kyle T. Woodruff, Diabetes
Association
Marie*, 12, lives with her Mom, two sisters and two
brothers in a small New Bedford apartment. While her
mother works full-time during the day and a 30-hour
part-time job at night, Marie is left with much
responsibility that prevents her from spending time
with her friends or enjoying the typical activities
that teenagers often do.
Last year, Marie faced yet another challenge when
she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. With very
little assistance from her mom, Marie became her own
caregiver by checking her blood sugar readings,
drawing and administering her insulin, and learning
about controlling her diet to avoid dangerously high
or low blood sugar levels. However, Marie still
needed a place where she could talk to someone about
her diabetes and enjoy time with her friends without
the stress of her family situation.
Fortunately, Marie found support at the Diabetes
Association’s Camp Kyle T. Woodruff for Children
with Diabetes in Rehoboth, Massachusetts - a place
where a child with diabetes can run, play, and meet
new friends who share similar challenges. United
Way’s Summer Fund Program provides children like
Marie with free transportation to Camp Kyle and
allows them to attend at no charge. Last year, 32
children recived free transportation to Camp Kyle
thanks to Summer Fund.
