Summer
Programs
For more than a decade, United Way’s
Summer Programs have provided local
children who face financial
obstacles or physical disabilities
with the opportunity to attend
summer camps and enrichment
programs. In 2008, with the help of
Chairman Senator Mark Montigny, the
program raised $26,620.

A total of 13 camps and summer
programs received funding this year.
Decisions were made based on
applications, final reports and 2007
site visits.
Thanks to generous support from the
Island Foundation and the Community
Foundation of Southeastern
Massachusetts - Acushnet Foundation
Fund, as well as gifts from area
businesses and private donors,
Summer Programs continues to provide
these children with a positive,
structured experience during the
summer months.

New Bedford Youth Employment Pilot
Program
In recognition of the need for
meaningful summer employment
opportunities for youth ages 17 to
21, United Way collaborated with a
group local funders to develop the
New Bedford Youth Employment Pilot
program. United Way took the lead by
administering the program which
raised $73,000 and provided 28 jobs
for deserving city youth. This
program was unique in that all of
the job placements were at local
nonprofit organizations in need of
needed staff support. A true
win-win!
